A Historic Winter Season Celebrated at Union Springs Varsity & JV Sports Awards

The Union Springs Central School District community gathered last night to celebrate what may go down as the most successful winter athletic season in school history during the annual Varsity and JV Winter Sports Awards ceremony.
Athletic Coordinator Todd Salls welcomed families, athletes, and coaches while reflecting on a season filled with remarkable achievements across multiple programs. Among the highlights from the 2025–26 winter season:
-
Nevin Brown, Madison “Maddy” Kalet, and Rocco Testa earned ESPN Athlete of the Week honors.
-
The Varsity Girls Basketball team was recognized as a Scholar-Athlete team.
-
Union Springs completed an incredible sweep of the Cayuga County Holiday Basketball Tournament, with all four basketball teams winning championships for the second consecutive year.
-
All four basketball teams captured their divisions and the overall IAC Small School Championships.
-
Every winter team qualified for Sectionals competition.
-
Tessa Love qualified for the New York State Indoor Track Championships in Staten Island.
Salls also presented the February Athlete of the Month Awards to Rocco Testa and Jennie Daum.
Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Success
Each program reflected on its season during the ceremony.
The Boys and Girls Bowling teams, coached by Marianne Viscardi, spoke about the challenges of losing their home lanes when Starlite Lanes closed, forcing the teams to travel extensively throughout the season. Despite the obstacles, the bowlers remained resilient and committed.
The Varsity Indoor Track team, led by Coaches Janet Murphy and Adam Presutti, highlighted a season full of personal records and growth. The team also shared their excitement about traveling to Staten Island this weekend to watch teammate Tessa Love compete at the New York State Indoor Track Championships.
Dominant Basketball Season
The basketball programs delivered one of the most dominant collective seasons the school has seen.
JV Boys Basketball, coached by Greg Tones, finished an extraordinary 20–0 season, marking the program’s first undefeated season since the early 1980s.
The Varsity Boys Basketball team, coached by Dan Cerro, compiled an impressive 20–3 record and climbed to #6 in the New York Division C rankings. Their season ended in the Sectional Semifinals after a hard-fought game against a talented Notre Dame squad. During the season, Rocco Testa also joined the prestigious 1,000-point club.
The JV Girls Basketball team, led by Coach Jim Hodges, finished 19–2, earning the nickname “road warriors” after playing 15 games on the road throughout the season.
Varsity Girls Continue Historic Run
The celebration ended with the Varsity Girls Basketball team, coached by Andy Kalet, whose season is still underway. The team finished the regular season 19–2, ranking #8 in Section IV and earning the #2 seed in the Section IV Class C Tournament.
Earlier this week, the Wolves advanced to the championship with a 44–33 semifinal victory over Unatego. They will now face Delaware Academy this Saturday in the Section IV Class C Championship game.
Coach Kalet noted it was too early to hand out team awards while the season continues, but he did recognize a historic milestone: both Maddy Kalet and Jennie Daum reached the 1,000-point club this season. Their achievements bring the total number of girls in Union Springs basketball history to reach the milestone to just four.
As the evening concluded, one thing was clear: the 2025–26 winter season will be remembered as one of the greatest in Union Springs history, thanks to the dedication, resilience, and talent of its student-athletes and coaches.
